TECHNIQUES AND MODALITIES

that we use to accelerate recovery include

  • Ultrasound – It has been shown to cause increases in tissue relaxation, local blood flow, and scar tissue breakdown. Increasing local blood flow can help reduce local swelling, chronic inflammation, and, according to some studies, promote bone fracture healing.
  • Electrical Stimulation – This is a type of therapeutic treatment that can serve many different purposes:
    • Decrease pain and inflammation
    • Improve circulation
    • Help muscles contract properly
  • Iontophoresis – A physician prescription is required and the patient is required to fill his/ her own medication prescription to bring to therapy for this treatment.
  • Cervical/Lumbar Traction – Cervical spinal traction is used for the short-term treatment of neck pain. It is designed to relieve muscle spasms and nerve root compression. Similarly, lumbar traction is the continuous or intermittent application of force to the spine either manually or mechanically. The goal is to reduce pain associated with nerve root impingement and muscle spasms.
  • Moist Heat/Ice – Generally used at the early stages of the injury, then gradually.
  • Cold Laser One Touch – This treatment utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue and accelerate healing processes. For patients suffering from acute and chronic conditions, this may help eliminate pain, swelling, reduce spasms, and increase functionality.
  • Soft Tissue/Joint Mobilization – Hands-on mobilization of muscle, tendons (muscle to bone connections), and ligaments (bone to bone connections).
  • Muscle Energy Techniques – Broad class of muscle therapy techniques directed at improving musculoskeletal function, joint function, and improving pain.
  • Biofeedback – This treatment helps patients with pelvic floor muscle disorders. Patients learn to strengthen or relax their pelvic floor muscles to improve bowel or bladder functions and decrease some types of pelvic floor pain.
  • Therapeutic Exercise – Bodily movement prescribed to correct an impairment, improve musculoskeletal function, or maintain a state of well being. It varies from highly selected activities restricted to specific muscles or parts of the body, to general and vigorous activities that can return a convalescing patient to peak physical condition.
  • Kinesiotape – A multitude of benefits:
    • Reduce pain
    • Neuromuscular re-education
    • Optimize performance
    • Injury prevention
    • Promote improved circulation and healing
